Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched ambitious project that aims to train over 40 crore people in India in different skills by 2022. The Government's flagship scheme, PMKVY (Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojana) aims to recognize and provide skill to 24 lakh youth who lack formal certification, such as workers in vast unorganized sector.

Realizing the need to boost vocational education on a larger scale, the UGC proposed to establish as many as 100 'Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centres for Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (KAUSHAL) during the XII Plan period i.e. 31 March 2017.
